Italy: First Stage of the Erasmus+ Project on Bird Migration and ringing

From April 20th to 26th, the first Erasmus+ session dedicated to bird migration, scientific bird ringing, and climate change took place in Italy. The excellent host was the OasiCostiera Ornithological Station, located in Cesenatico (Emilia-Romagna region) and led by the tireless Sandro Brina, an ornithologist who has broken all ringing records in his country, with more than 150,000 birds ringed throughout his career. + DETAILS and PHOTOS

In June, Barcelona, Lleida and the Ebro Delta hosted the young researchers

In June, Catalonia welcomed young ornithology researchers from Italy and Turkey, who joined their Catalan hosts, as well as researchers from Madrid and the Canary Islands.

The group of 25 participants visited Barcelona and Lleida, and also spent a few days in the Ebro Delta. They began their Erasmus week by presenting their research projects at the University of Barcelona and attending lectures on bird migration and climate change given by leading experts in the field.
In the Serralada de Marina mountain range in Badalona, they visited the Can Miravitges Nature School, learned about butterfly population dynamics monitoring, and the Fenocat program.
Also in Barcelona, they were invited to visit the CosmoCaixa science museum.

The program continued in Lleida, where they had the opportunity to visit the fascinating Ivars and Vila-sana lake, which was drained in the 1950s and restored in this century. There, they also participated in a day of scientific bird banding. During their time in the Ebro Delta, they explored the lagoons of the southern half and the dunes and natural areas of the northern half. A highlight of their visit was the Mussol Park, a former municipal landfill transformed into a biodiversity reserve.
Between discoveries of local culture and gastronomy, they ended the weekend participating in the Bioblitz at Cap de Salou.

This intense and diverse experience left the team ready for their next adventure in Turkey.
